B'NAI MITZVAH

Entrance into Adult Jewish Life
a simcha to be called to the Torah for the first time

Becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a significant Jewish life cycle event. When called to the Torah for the first time, it is a simcha, a joy, for the entire community. It marks an important step in the spiritual growth of a Jewish person. The student has grown in Jewish knowledge and is ready, through further study, to acquire a more mature understanding of Judaism and to assume the responsibilities of Jewish life.

A B'nai Mitzvah is traditionally a coming of age ritual for Jewish youth around the age of 13. However, we welcome students of all ages who have not yet read from the Torah. Our programs embrace both our youth as well as adult members.

Rabbi Goldson works with each student individually, helping them to understand the significance of having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah and preparing them for the service they will lead in celebration of this joyous stage of life. Our B'nei Mitzvah program teaches students to study liturgy, Hebrew, trope (Torah chanting), and write a d’var Torah, or teaching of their Torah portion.

Youth

Students in our Religious School are on a path to B'nei Mitzvah from whatever age they join. B'nei Mitzvot for youth normally fall around 13. At age 12 they will begin weekly B'nei Mitzvah tutoring with Rabbi Goldson. During this preparation period, students are also expected to attend Shabbat services, holiday services, and to engage with the Jewish community however they can.

To get started, parents must speak with Rabbi Goldson and the Religious School madrichim (teachers) to determine a date with at least 1 year of anticipation. This will provide ample time for planning and preparation for this momentous accomplishment!

► Adult B'nei Mitzvah

Our Adult B'nei Mitzvah program is open to all members who have not yet gone through the ritual of a Bar/Bat/B'nei Mitvah. Depending on demand, this can be done individually or within a cohort. If interested, please contact Rabbi Goldson directly.
